ABOUT US: THE MISSION AND HISTORY OF THE SKI CLUB OF NEW JERSEY

Mission
The mission of the Ski Club of New Jersey is to cultivate good fellowship among Club members and friends of the sports of skiing and snowboarding, and to promote and further skiing and ski excursions among its membership, and to qualify its Members in controlled skiing techniques as recommended by the Ski Club of New Jersey.

History
The Ski Club of N.J., the oldest ski club in New Jersey, was formed in 1938 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts from the YMCA in Hackensack, N.J.  Skiing was just starting to get popular, and the Club, starting with 5 members, rapidly increased in membership.  The Club from the very beginning stressed control skiing, instruction for beginners, and having great social activities (which they still have today).  After a year or so in Hackensack, they moved to River Edge, NJ, where they shared space with the Bergen Players, an amateur theatrical group!  In those days, skiing was mostly on Sundays, and trips were made to the Catskills, where we climbed the mountains.  Many learned to ski on the golf course at Mohonk outside New Paltz, N.Y.  Vacations were to Rutland. Pico (opened 1938), Stowe, North Conway, etc.  In those days there weren't many areas with lifts, so vacations meant we could ride a lift!  When World War II was declared 12-7-41, a high percentage of the Club joined the Services, both male and female.  A number of our Club joined the 10th Mt Division ski troops, and served well during the war years.  The Club also helped form the New Jersey Ski Council in 1939 and reactivated activities in 1946.  A number of our Club served as officers of the NJSC, and went on to serve in the U.S. Eastern Amateur Association, as well as the National Ski Association.

In 1960, we purchased our own Lodge in Chittenden, VT.  The Lodge is wholly owned by the Club, and is used year round for all type of activities.  We are located not far from Killington and Pico, and we ski the areas in the vicinity of Rutland.  Many of the members also ski our local NJ ski areas, as well as the lower Catskills.  Over the years, a number of our members turned professional, teaching at Killington, Aspen, Sun Valley, Steamboat, and other larger areas.

The Club also organizes vacation trips annually to various places in Europe, as well as to our major ski areas in the West and Canada. We have a long history in skiing and have enjoyed every minute of it.
